I love a good MAC Holiday collection, especially a palette that will stand the test of time. I actually have real vivid memories of buying my first ever one back in 2008, and it was one of the Passions of Red Holiday palettes as seen here on Temptalia, and I genuinely still own it now. It’s been very well loved (bit bashed and bruised!), and for me it was a treasured item that I couldn’t believe I managed to afford on my student loan budget.
Fast forward to 2014 and we’re now in MAC Holiday territory again, this time with the Holiday collection being called the ‘Keepsakes.’ The palettes are decorated in an ornate, vintage style, with faux pearls adorning the outside, and a little Victorian looking cameo in the middle. There’s three different ones, but the one that caught my eye was the Smoky Eyes palette, as I thought it had the most versatility. It also contains some limited edition shades next to some permanent shades, so would make a lovely useful gift for a beauty lovin’ girl.
I also managed to get my hands on some of the Heirloom Mix collection thanks to the lovely MAC team, and this is the standalone collection for the holiday season. So while Keepsakes has palettes, little gift bags and brush sets, Heirloom Mix is the usual Lipsticks, Eyeshadows/Pressed Pigments and other single bits and bobs, so a nice little treat for you or a stocking filler for a friend without having to buy the gift sets.
My favourite of the pieces I have definitely has to be the Mineralize Blush in shade Sweet Sentiment but I also love the Pressed Pigment too. These aren’t anything groundbreakingly special on the whole, but I think I lucked out by getting the nicest shade in my opinion, which is the glittery Regal Affair. It works on top of any eyeshadow adding a bit of holiday season sparkle, and works even better wet.
There’s also the lipsticks, and the one I have is in Salon Rouge, which is a fairly deep classic red. I like mixing it up though with the Cremesheen Glass, layering it over the top to make a new and glossy lip lacquer look which is what i’ve done in these photos here to make it stand out. Mine is shade Social Season and it’s especially pretty over reds, although I tried it over a deep purple plum and it looked beaut. Salon Rouge is a nice lipstick, but it’s nothing groundbreaking, which is why I like to put Social Season Cremesheen Glass over the top to make it holiday sparkle ready!
All in all I think there’s some pretty bits in the holiday collections, and I think the palettes do make the sweetest little gifts. Even though the eyeshadows inside them are quite small, realistically how often do we ever use up a palette anyway? It’s still reasonable for the price and for me that’s what makes it a winner. I also think the little bits and bobs from Heirloom Mix on their own make pretty glittery stocking fillers!
What do you think of MAC’s offering for this holiday season? Does anything out of the bits and bobs I have take your fancy?
