So that glorious time of year has finally come around and thousands of awesome people made their way to Donington ready for Download Festival! I’ve been so privileged to have been given a pass into Download to experience it again and to relive the beautiful years of my youth spent at Download. Friday’s main stage headliner was Avenged Sevenfold, but the second stage headliner was The Offspring, and they absolutely killed it again.
The layout of Download has changed this year and it’s completely different, and I actually think it works really well. It’s a bit of a walk between everything, but the place is so huge it is to be expected. The sound is absolutely perfect – miles better than at Groezrock – and it’s made everything sound beautiful. Mega kudos to Download for that! There’s a million clothes stands and so much food to choose from, and to top it all off, the vibes and the people are just absolutely stellar. I’ve never met a nicer bunch of strangers than I have at Download.
So Friday we drove down from London and headed in just in time for my meet up with Melonlady in the So Chill Circle and I was pretty overwhelmed that anyone even turned up! It means the absolute world to me when people come up to me in public and say hi (cos I love chatting!) and so to have a little area where lots of you lovely lot could, was just beautiful and I left feeling so happy and overwhelmed. Thanks you guys for genuinely being the best ever readership I could ask for!
We saw Skindred, who were hilarious and brought a ton of energy to the main stage early on in the afternoon. After that we headed over to see Drones who are a great upcoming punk band that are worth a listen – and did not disappoint live. Letlive were next level, Jason had been hobbling around backstage on crutches all morning due to injury, but promptly threw them at the crowd and rocked. Hard. He thanked the security for letting him come back after last year and boy, was it worth it! I could not recommend seeing them more. We then watched a little bit of Baby Godzilla who are always incredible live, and the little tent they were in was absolutely overflowing with people.
Of course we couldn’t have not seen Jamie Lenman so we went over to the Jager Acoustic Stage to see him play with his full band and as he did when we saw him headline in Islington last month, he tore it up. A live show to remember, he brought out (Georges mate!) Rob to play a saxophone rendition of tequila in the middle. Best show of the day. We then mooched around and soaked up the vibes (and small amounts of rain) before watching The Offspring who played Smash in full and ended with ALL the hits, including The Kids Aren’t Alright which was out of this world. An amazing nostalgic way to end the day with G, we then made the trek over to the campsite to watch our mate Matt Stocks DJ the Doghouse tent before heading home!
I bumped into the ever gorgeously lovely Amy Valentine in the guest area who’s here this weekend working with Iron Fist, and was having a blast! I also managed to meet Ali who ran into me while I was shooting my outfit pics so we had a pic together too! This girl’s blog is fab, you have to check it out and go subscribe here!
All round, an amazing day and set us up nicely for Saturday, which i’ll get back to you on tomorrow…!
Just a little note on the fact that it’s Fathers Day, if it weren’t for my cool Dad, I wouldn’t have gone to Download back in 05 when I was 16 years old, and it’s not been forgotten. My dad has supported me through thick and thin with my weird lifestyle choices and hair colours all over the bathroom and always been the best dad ever. Big love to all those dads out there today, as well as new dads – that some of my friends are now.
I’m off to enjoy Sunday at Download now, this weekend has flown!
